Keeping It Under Control

Quite a few people have been asking me how I keep my skin clear. Now, by no means is my skin perfect but, I can say I have come a long way from where I first started.

I still have my areas of improvement like dark spots and occasional pimples but, I can say I am in a happy place with my skin overall. Ultimately, I think when it comes to skin it’s all about your level of comfort. It’s difficult to aim for perfect skin but, it’s easier to improve on what you have and accept your flaws. For me, I don’t mind the dark spots peeking through my tinted moisturizer or walking around bare-faced with all my imperfections, I think it’s what makes you who you are. Anyway, here are my top products that have massively improved my skin over the past few years. I hope they help you as much as they have helped me.

I’ve been using this cleanser for about 6 years and haven’t found anything that competes. I think the key to this gel cleanser, at least for my skin, is the 0.5% salicylic acid. Like I mentioned before, I have really sensitive skin and every once in a while I will get pimples. I believe this does a great job of controlling my mild breakouts.

From what I understand the acid is released throughout the day after you cleanse your face, instead of all at once. I use a nickel sized amount, sometimes more for that extra foam, twice a day. The only con of this product is the price, I remember when this cleanser was less than $30 but, I will probably continue to buy it because it’s just that good. It usually lasts me about 1.5 to 2 months.

This product is life for me. As a combination to sometimes extremely oily individual living in the humid bubble that is South Florida, this mattifying gel saves my skin from itself. Right after I cleanse but, before I moisturize, I put a dime sized amount on in my t-zone area. It keeps me matte throughout the daytime.

I remember as a teen I would struggle to mattify my face and keep it matte. Products like this just didn’t exist at the time so I turned to toilet paper (we were all broke teenagers once), then mattifying sheets, then just letting my face shine like the disco ball it was in all it’s natural glory. Now, this has changed the game for me. This product is also great because the willowherb extract helps to lighten dark spots. This usually lasts me 1.5 to 2 months.

While keeping my face matte another battle is keeping it matte with an SPF on top of it. Anyone with oily skin knows how terrible it feels to put more oil on your face which was usually the case when using moisturizers with SPF protection. I honestly would avoid SPF moisturizers like the plague just a few years until I discovered this beauty. SPF is important to not only wear when it’s sunny but, also when it’s overcast to protect your skin from harmful sun rays.

With this lotion I use about one squirt which, usually covers my entire face. It’s lightweight and oil-free with a nude color that doesn’t show up on your skin (all of the goodness). This is my last step to my morning skincare routine before I start my day and it usually lasts me about 2 months. Ultimate pro is the SPF 30 protection.

Nighttime for me is all about hydration. After keeping my skin as matte as possible throughout the day, overnight my skin drinks up extra moisture and hydration. I love this creamy moisturizer because the active coffee ingredient makes my skin look refreshed and supple.

When using this cream, I take a dime size amount (sometimes less) and rub it all over my face just before bed. This jar usually lasts around 2.5 months. One of my favorite things about it is the citrus smell.

A perfect dupe for the Origins GinZing moisturizer is this similar hydrating moisturizer from Alba Botanica. Sometimes, I may not want to shell out the extra cash and can find just what my skin needs with this creamy moisturizer. I believe the green tea component acts similarly to the coffee in the GinZing moisturizer by keeping my face looking fresh and youthful.

I also believe that the aloe ingredient helps with any inflammation from any healing pimples. I usually use a dime-sized amount and rub it on my face after I’ve cleansed and dried my face. This usually lasts me about 2.5 months. An ultimate pro about this product is that you can find it in CVS, Whole Foods, or any pharmacy.
